Notes:
The Kiev class frigate was designed to fill the need for a fastresponse craft with heavy weapons capability. Serving primarily along the Romulan Neutral Zone, the Kiev was conceived as an interceptor against any Romulan incursions along the border. Currently it has also supplemented fleets along other borders.
The nature of Romulan border incursions- mainly one to three ships using cloaking devices- warranted the development of a ship with intercept capabilities to counter these incursions when detected. Unlike the large intercept groups on the Klingon border, where incursions tend to be of three or more vessels without cloaks, the Romulan border called for a more flexible design which could catch the intruders within the boundaries of Federation space. The Kiev class was chosen to fill this role.
Along the Romulan border, Kievs are usually deployed in groups of two, where they patrol an area of space within a classified radius of Starfleet Neutral Zone monitoring outposts. When a possible Romulan vessel is detected within the neutral zone or Federation space, the Kievs nearest the detected “bogies” are dispatched. Other Kiev groups are then deployed in an entrapment pattern to seal off any potential escape routes for the enemy vessels. Along the Klingon border, Kievs mainly supplement formed fleets and assume the traditional role of a frigate. Kievs have beenknown to operate alone within the Triangle.
Kievs carry a contingent of 124 marines aboard. These marines are specialized in boarding operations against starships, with each contingent specially trained in boarding actions against ships particular to their current deployment area. These marines also have two assault shuttlecraft available for any missions that may manifest. These shuttlecraft are in addition to the two standard shuttlecraft aboard.
In October of 2287 (2/23), the USS Ramon and the USS Chawla, both Mk I Kievs, were deployed to assist the USS Richland, Mk III Northampton class frigate, against a Romulan V-6 Gallant Wing which had invaded Federation space. Although the majority of the incident is classified, the Richland had sustained damage to its warp engines while doing battle against the V-6 and was in need of assistance in stopping the Romulan vessel from reentering Romulan space. Due to the actions of the Ramon and Chawla, the Gallant Wing was destroyed and the battledamaged Richland was escorted back to starbase.
Of the 210 Kiev class frigates built, 66 Mk Is and 91 Mk IIs remain in active service, with 30 Mk Is having been upgraded to Mk IIs. One Mk I and 2 Mk IIs have been assigned to Starfleet Training Command. Twelve Mk Is and 4 Mk IIs have been destroyed. One Mk I is listed as
missing and 2 Mk Is and 1 Mk II have been scrapped. The Kiev is manufactured at the Salazaar and Merak shipyards at a combined rate of 14 per year. The Mk I is no longer in production.

Graphic Notes: Another of his wonderful re-draws, Brad has mannaged to keep the feel of the Kiev while adding a few bells and whistles. He's also managed to make the desing NOT look like another Reliant/Knox replica. Simply awsome work!

Design Notes: I was sorly tempted to use Brad's Mk III, IV and V, but in the end decided again it. His Mk V was too manueverable, and I didn't feel it would be right to use just two of his designs without using the third. We did use his variants as the basis for the Mk III, IV and V however. The Mk II is a modified version of the variant published at Morena. Production numbers may be modified in the future.
